As my fantasy team is coming off of a Montreal Screwjob, having played against Frank Gore and Chris Johnson this past week, I decided that I needed to shake things up. My team is putting up a nice amount of points relatively, but I have a weakness at the wide receiver position, and some uncertainty with running backs right now.
Because of that, I gave Eddie Royal the boot. Sure, a lot of people are going to say it’s only two weeks in, and he is too good to drop for Julian Edelman, but I was tired of having a weakness on my team. Additionally, I realized that Kyle Orton is the reason thatÂ
Royal is off to a slow start. Since I took Royal based on his stats from last season, I was taking a receiver who was catching passes from Jay Cutler, not garbage Kyle Orton. Without Cutler, the Broncos receivers have very little value, and I don’t think that they are worth my time. Especially Royal as their number TWO guy.
Now for the reason I picked up Julian Edelman in his place. Did you know that Edelman, who is coming off of an 8 catches for 98 yards performance, is considered a wide receiver/quarterback in Yahoo! leagues? That’s incredible! That means if either one of my quarterbacks has a bye week, and Wes Welker is injured during that week, I could start a wide receiver at the quarterback spot instead of some waiver wire chump like Marc Bulger. This reminded me of the Marques Colston wide receiver/tight end blunder, so I felt compelled to jump on it even though Edelman might not see much action for the rest of the season. Just because it is possible he will play, and play well based on last game’s performance, I felt he deserved a spot on my roster for now.
Another move I made was dropping Larry Johnson for Johnny Knox.
Some people still seem to consider Larry Johnson as a premiere back in the league. Why? For me, I picked him up as a free agent this past week because he was playing against the Raiders. He had a great history against them, so I figured I could get a nice week out of him, and keep him as an option for future weeks. Little problem. He had an average week, and that is just not good enough against a team that you should run all over. So I dropped Johnson just as quickly as I picked him up, for my uses for him were now complete.
Now for the Johnny Knox pick up. As I mentioned earlier, I drafted Eddie Royal, a number two receiver of Jay Cutler last season, because of his production in ’08. Well, now it seems that Johnny Knox might be the guy to fill that role in Chicago. He has posted big numbers thus far, and he could be a real asset to my receiving corps. If he becomes the Royal of this year, I will be stoked.
If I really wanted to act hastily, I could have dropped Santana Moss as well. He has done diddly poo (Jim Mora reference) in the first two games, which includes a game against the awful Rams. This week he is playing the lowly Lions, and he better put up some great numbers if he wants to be part of my championship squad. If he has a dud this week, I am going to strongly consider benching him and possibly letting him go. Because he is the number one guy in Washington, I will have a harder time dropping him than I had dropping Royal.
Until next time, good luck with your fantasy teams, and don’t be afraid to shake things up. It’s the only way to achieve greatness!
