It’s only two games into Rex Ryan’s career as head coach of the New York Jets, and he has already had more headliners than a
veteran. His latest ‘one liner’ deals with his decision to give Fireman Ed the game ball following the Jets’ victory over the Patriots this past Sunday.
As was highly publicized, Rex Ryan left a voice message to season ticket holders that said that it was their job to make things miserable for Brady and the Patriots.
Because Fireman Ed is the Jets’ most loyal and entertaining fan, Ryan chose to give him the game ball because he answered the message, and he made things “miserable” for Brady and company.
This uncoventional act is exactly what the Jets and their fans love about their new head coach. He is not afraid to be real and connect with the fans, and he just acts like one of the guys. This approach can be very effective in getting the team to buy into his mentality, and it should ultimately promote the proper team unity that is essential for winning. By the coach showing that the fans are just as important to the team as a player, he is displaying the importance that everyone in the organization has to help this team succeed. By getting everyone on the same page, and getting everyone to try to achieve a common goal, the sky is the limit for the Jets.
