LeGarrette Blount, the Oregon running back who was suspended for punching Byron Hout of Boise State, is being considered forĀ
reinstatement by Oregon coach, Chip Kelly. Following the punch, there were speculations that Blount’s life was going to go downhill from there. No more college football, and definitely no chance to play in the NFL with that kind of attitude problem. Blount’s one punch basically seemed like a life sentence full of trouble.
Realizing the severity of his actions, Blount decided to write an apology letter, which was published in the Oregon campus newspaper. In addition, Blount has spoken and impressed some people such as Tony Dungy, Jon Gruden, and Kermit Washington about his issue and how he is truly sorry about the mistake that he made.
Now, I am a person who believes that everybody is entitled to a second chance. Everybody messes up somewhere because nobody is perfect. We all have flaws that we need to correct, and LeGarrette Blount is no different.
He is clearly sorry about what he did based on his statement, and the way he has impressed some of the smarter minds associated with sports. If someone like Tony Dungy is suggesting to coach Chip Kelly that Blount should be reinstated, I think that stands for something.
Believe me, if Blount came out with a bad attitude following the incident, and he started skipping class, and he didn’t atone for his mistake, I would say that he is probably a lost cause. Just the fact that he has the ability to admit he was wrong, even if he doesn’t believe it deep down, it shows that he has the potential to be the bigger man and choose the right decisions. It shows that he is not stubborn, and he is willing to change to help himself become a better person.
When I read his statement, it was evident to me that it was heartfelt, and that he didn’t just throw out some words that he felt were convincing. This situation has clearly affected him a lot, and it appears to me that he is well on his way to becoming a more respectable human being.
So should LeGarrette Brown be reinstated?
I say yes. As long as he continues on his path to self-improvement, he definitely deserves a second chance to prove that he has grown up. However, if there are any red flags along the way, this guy is done for good.
