Should You Start Westbrook in Week 5?

For all of you Brian Westbrook owners, you must be having a tough time deciding on whether or not to start the potentially 57335637 fantastic running back this week.

I have Westbrook as well as LeSean McCoy on my team, and although they are playing a weak defense in Tampa Bay, I am not so high on starting either one of them. They each have the ability to put up a big week, but they still do not have defined roles in the offense.

They will each take carries/touches away from each other, and neither one of them is a sure bet. For that reason, I would say to start another running back in the place of Westbrook. You should, of course, bench him in favor of another starter who will get the bulk of the touches for his team.

For instance, guys like Jerome Harrison and Tim Hightower are running backs that I would trust more right now. You know what they are going to get the chance to do, and they are clearly featured backs in their systems. Also, like Westbrook, they have the ability to catch the ball out of the backfield which is very important in those PPR leagues.

So you Westbrook owners should be patient right now until you know a defined role for the shifty Eagles back. Once the Eagles get into a flow for a couple of weeks, you should have a better idea of how to use Westbrook to help your team achieve fantasy supremacy. There is no doubt that he still has value. You just need to pick your spots, and use him at the right times.

  1. I have both Westbrook and McCoy and I think I’m going to play both of them. My other options are Kevin Smith against Pittsburgh and Cedric Benson against Baltimore, both tough defenses against the run. It’s all about the matchup. I’m hoping Westbrook gets a touchdown and about 60 yards before they bench him and put in McCoy. By the time they put in McCoy they’ll have a significant lead so I expect McCoy to get a lot of yards in the second half.

    • Yeah, I’ll never do that again. hahahaha. I’m still in shock that Cedric Benson 20.60 fan pts against the Ravens. I’m never benching him again.

      • It’s not a bad play being that the Eagles backs were against the Bucs and Benson was against the Ravens. It just turned out unfortunately, and Benson had an unexpectedly great fantasy week.
