Whether the Yankees face the Phillies or the Dodgers WHEN they make it to the World Series, it will be an intriguing series. To me, it really comes down to 3 people: Pedro Martinez, Joe Torre, and Manny Ramirez.
If the Phillies are able to win 3 out of the next 6 games against the Dodgers, they will be in the World Series. If that happens, there is a good chance that game 2 of that World Series will have Pedro Martinez pitching against his ”Daddy,” the Yankees. With all of the bitter hatred between the Yankees and Pedro Martinez and vice versa, it will no doubt be one of the most anticipated matchups in quite some time. Pedro would love to beat the Yankees in a World Series game, and the Yankees would love to hit his pitches all over the park en route to their 27th world championship. This situation almost seems too perfect to be true, and it would totally distract me from the fact that Boston did not face New York in the ALCS.
Then there are the Dodgers. As you all know, the Dodgers’ manager is Joe Torre, the manager who led the Yankees to 4 championships in 5 seasons. It is obvious that Joe would love to beat his former team, especially the way that things ended off between them. He would love to prove that letting him go was a mistake, and he knows exactly what it would take to beat his former team.
Also, unlike his years with the Yankees, Torre now has the services of Manny Ramirez, a Yankees’ killer. Ramirez, like Pedro, loves to hate the Yankees, and nothing would make him happier than ruining another one of their seasons. Every time this guy would step into batter’s box, it would be a huge occasion, and it would be really awesome to see how a guy like CC Sabathia would do against him.
So between those 3 guys and the history they have with the Yankees, the World Series is set up to be a real treat. Now the only thing that stands in the way of that treat is that team known as the Angels.
