If an undefeated team is able to get any better, the Colts just did. Not only are the Colts 5-0 and playing the Rams this weekend, but they are getting their defensive leader, Bob Sanders back.
Sanders is a huge asset to this team, and he should improve them immensely. Their defense has been more than sufficient without him, and they should become that much better with him. He has the ability to make a good defense great, and his impact should be evident right away as the Colts face a struggling Rams offense.
When the Colts won the Super Bowl in 2006, Peyton Manning did not do a whole lot in the playoffs. Rather, Bob Sanders and the Colts defense was the key reason why this team was able to get over the hump. They played hard, and they did not need the offense to be in attack mode for the team to be successful.
Right now, when Peyton Manning is playing at an extremely high level, any positive additions to the defense will make this team nearly unbeatable. Sanders is THAT good when healthy, but he needs to be fully healthy to really help this team. If he is not able to get back to his best form right away because of health or missed time, the Colts should work him in to the defense gradually.
By doing that, the Colts will not disrupt the success that they have had, and they could have their best defensive player back to top shape by the time the playoffs start. Also, with a relatively easy schedule, the Colts should have the leeway to get him back and comfortable without hurting their record in the process.
Between the return of Bob Sanders and an easy schedule, the Colts are set up perfectly for another possible Super Bowl run in 2009.
