After beating up on the Giants in the Superdome, the Saints are 5-0. This week they get to play a team that is unlike any other teamĀ
that they have, or will play all season. That team, of course, is the Miami Dolphins.
What makes the Dolphins so unique is their ability to control the clock and run the football so effectively using their Wildcat Offense. Some people might think that the Wildcat is overhyped, but as I have seen firsthand, it is truly as good as advertised.
The reason that I know it is great is because even when opposing defenses know they are going to run it, they still can’t stop it. It is no secret that the Dolphins run the Wildcat, yet teams are still giving up huge chunks of yards on those plays.
Other teams around the league have tried to run the Wildcat, but they are not as good as Miami is at it. Their key to success is their 2 great running backs, Ricky Williams and Ronnie Brown. They are each viable number 1 backs, and they keep each other fresh throughout the game. How are teams supposed to stop both of them?
If a team were to slow down the high-powered Saints’ offense, it would be by keeping Brees and company off of the field as much as possible. That is exactly what the Dolphins do. However, as the Colts showed on Monday Night Football, a high-powered offense might only need 14 minutes and 53 seconds to do enough damage and come out with a victory against Miami.
But Miami is not the same team they were on that Monday night against the Colts. Now they have Chad Henne at quarterback, who is capable of throwing an awesome deep ball and can cause a defense a lot of problems if the running game is solid. They have not lost with him as the starter, and maybe he is even a better fit than Pennington is for this team.
Overall, this game should be very interesting. Will Brees be able to do enough with the limited time he has with the ball? Will the Wildcat be as good as it has been thus far? What will Chad Henne’s role be in this game?
All of those questions and more will be answered on Sunday, and I cannot wait.
