Even though I am a Knick fan, and the team has been awful for too many years now, I still can’t wait for the NBA season to begin. It
seems like every year, although deep down I know they are going to be terrible, I always get excited at the start of the season, and I hope things might be different. I do realize the pattern that occurs every year, but it really doesn’t matter to me.
It is fun to watch the games, and make believe that they really have a chance to make the playoffs. It is fun to hold my breath at the end of a close game in hopes of them pulling out a victory against the Bobcats. It is fun to watch the Knicks have one of those exciting games against a great team just to fall short by a basket.
Yes the Knicks have been absolutely atrocious lately, but they still know how to put on a show. Whether it is blowing a big lead to keep the game close, or it is Nate Robinson interacting with Will Ferrell on the sidelines, the Knicks are a fun team to root for.
When the expectations are as low as they are right now, one win is much more appreciated by Knicks fans. That, as opposed to being a Lakers’ fan and wondering how they can ever lose a game. When the Lakers do not win it all, it is considered an off season, but not for the Knicks and their fans.
I remember the 1999 lockout season, the year the Knicks made the championship and lost to the San Antonio Spurs. That season was one of my favorites in my sports-watching history, and the fact that there was so much excitement before the finals, it didn’t matter that they lost to the Spurs. There was the fact that they made the playoffs with a relatively young coach in Jeff Van Gundy. There was the Allan Houston tear drop to beat the number 1 seeded Miami Heat. There was the Larry Johnson 4-point play to beat the Pacers. All those things just made that a season to remember, and that is what being a Knick fan is all about to me. It is about those stand-out moments that make up the entire season.
Sure, winning is the ultimate goal when you root for a team, but to me, being a Knick fan is
about a whole lot more. It is about following them through their rare ups and frequent downs. It is sticking with them even though you know there is no hope. It is about finding that great game in the middle of January when their rookie has the performance of his lifetime.
Words can’t explain what it is really like to be a Knick fan. You just have to be a true fan to know. And if you are, I am sure you feel the same way that I do.
