I have always felt that the human mind is one of the most fascinating things that exists in the world today. So many people come up
with extremely creative ideas just to get a basic point across. To me, a profession that truly displays the phenomenon of the mind is coaching in professional sports.
My favorite thing about coaching, is that every coach has their own approach to how its done. Bobby Knight liked to throw chairs, Jerry Tarkanian liked to bite on towels, and Bill Parcells liked to leave to leave surprises in the locker room. Although each of those coaches were doing something different, they all did ”their thing” to get a message across to their teams.
The latest coach to go unconventional on his team is Brad Childress of the Minnesota Vikings. This week leading up to his team’s big matchup with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Childress dressed up as a flight attendant. He wore lipstick, blue nylons, a wig, the whole nine. He really went above and beyond to get a point across to his team.
What message was that?
”It’s just a game; have fun.”
When the leader of your team is willing to do something so different and out of the ordinary, the players are going to respect that, as the Vikings did. It shows that he is willing to lower himself for the betterment of the team, and the message is indeed powerful. If he is willing to do that for his team, I can only imagine how much the team wants to do for him.
Whether or not the Vikings come out and beat the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday, the Vikings know one thing: Their coach believes in them 100%, and he has the confidence in them to produce on the field.
Once a team knows that their coach is behind them, like strong roots at the base of a big tree, they can go out and achieve much more as a team. If the roots are strong, the tree will certainly blossum, and we have definitely seen that up to this point with the Minnesota Vikings.
