Following a week of Wade Phillips bashing, and Mike Shanahan wishing, the Dallas Cowboys shut me up on Sunday against the Falcons.
I expected the Falcons to cause a lot of problems for the ‘Boys with the likes of Tony Gonzalez and Roddy White. In the beginning, when White scored a touchdown for a 7-0 Falcons lead, I thought that the rout was on. However, that is when the defense started to turn it up on Matty Ice and the Dirty Birds.
The Cowboys’ defense which struggled to record sacks earlier in the season, put on a show with 4 of them, including 2 by D-Ware. Also, because of the pressure they were getting on Ryan, they were able to force bad throws, and that led to 2 interceptions. With the defense in place, the Cowboys offense began to pick it up also.
Although the running game was not the best it was all season, I felt the passing game was. Romo looked like the Romo that I had come to know and love, as he scrambled around to buy time, and made the defense look silly. He threw for 3 touchdowns, 2 of them to his newest star receiver Miles Austin, and he completed 72% of his passes. Best of all, Romo did not throw an interception. He truly looked like the top 5 Romo that had disappeared in the beginning of this season.
When the Cowboys can play as well as they did on Sunday, against a team that I consider one of the best in the NFC, it proves to me that they are as good as I thought they were all season long. With the way they have played, and the questionable play-calling, I began to think that maybe this team would always play worse than their potential. Especially when they decided to keep Wade Phillips during the bye week, I basically threw this season out the window, knowing that this team would continue to underachieve. Sunday’s game has me thinking twice.
Let’s just hope they don’t have a clunker against a very beatable Seahawks team. If they do, I will be right back on that Wade Phillips bashing bandwagon. But for now, I am going to rejoice because of this wonderful victory, and hope that it leads to greener pastures for the rest of the season.
