Last night was one of my favorite sports nights in a long time. There was opening night for the Knicks and Warriors (favorite teams), there was game 1 of the World Series, and there were a ton of other NBA games that I was interested in. I followed as many games as I could, and while watching, I jotted all of my thoughts down on Twitter. By the end of the night, I had quite a few tweets, and thus, many observations from a very intriguing night of sports. Here are just a few:
Rollins opens up the Fall Classic with a bunt – From here, I knew right off the bat, literally, that the Phillies were going to be a pesky team. Starting the World Series with a bunt, even though it was not successful, sent a message that this team is willing to play small ball. I think that this type of play will be very evident over the course of this series.
Knicks featuring Darko early…2-2 from the field – Midway through the first quarter, the Knicks had Darko Milicic in the game, and he started off hot, at least for Darko’s standards. I thought that this could mean one of two things; either Milicic was beginning to play like everybody once thought he could, or the Knicks were in for a very long season. I am going with the latter.
OKC is fun to watch - Yes, the Thunder played against the league’s possible worst team in the Kings, but they had a ton of points by halftime, and they did it in an exciting way. Between Durant, Westbrook, and Jeff Green the Thunder have some great young talent.
The Knicks are experiencing a third quarter in Hell – The Knicks and Heat were within 10 points at halftime, but the third quarter was another story. The Heat annihilated the Knicks 34-15 in the third, and separated themselves so that they could cruise easily to a victory.
Chase is a beast…Thats 2 homers off of CC – If you didn’t see it, Chase Utley single-handedly provided all the necessary runs for the Phillies in game 1 of the World Series. He hit 2 home runs against the Yankees’ best pitcher, and gave him his first loss of the 2009 postseason.
Cliff Lee lookin’ bored out there – Cliff Lee motored through the Yankees’ lineup last night, and he did not look the slightest bit nervous. He played it cool and showed the Yankees and their fans exactly who he is. The way he nonchalantly caught a pop up and reacted like it was no big deal showed exactly how he felt about everything that was taking place. It was clear that his face portrayed exactly how he felt inside because his performance backed it up.
Nique’s kid finishes off the Nets – The New Jersey Nets blew a 19-point lead against the Minnesota T’Wolves on Wednesday night. The Wolves completed the comeback at the buzzer when Damien Wilkins, Dominique’s son, hit the game-winning shot. Somewhere, Dominique has a big smile on his face.
Jeet the lone bright spot for the Yankees – Derek Jeter showed why he is the captain of the Yankees in game 1. Although Cliff Lee was able to shut down the entire Yankees lineup, Jeter was the only one who was able to figure him out. Jeter was 3-4 against Lee, and he is hoping that the rest of the team can pick it up the next time around.
Ty Lawson is the man – Nuggets’ rookie point guard Ty Lawson turned some heads in his team’s opening game. Following his performance in the NCAA tournament, I thought that Lawson was going to have the biggest impact from the rookie class on the NBA this season. He looked like he might prove me right last night. Lawson played so well, that he actually became a trending topic on Twitter, and many people were already crowning him the Rookie of the Year.
Wow…Nash still has it – As I caught the final few minutes of the Suns-Clippers game, I watched Steve Nash step up huge down the stretch. I did not expect Nash to be as good as he was last night because I felt that he would be too old for those kind of performances. However, Nash showed me that he is using his sports gym and keeping in shape. Nash finished off the Clips with a beautiful lefty scoop lay-up that kissed high off the glass. Suns win 109-107.
