After Brandon Spikes’ attempted eye gouge of a Georgia player, Spikes was ruled out for the first half of his team’s next game versus Vanderbilt. However, Spikes feels that his team would be better off if he was suspended for the entire game, as he will not be able to be a distraction. So, Brandon Spikes actually suspended himself from the Vanderbilt game.
For Brandon Spikes to accept his punishment, and to even go as far as to increase it, it shows that he is truly sorry for his actions. Also, it shows that he is mature enough to realize that a punishment could be a good thing for him. Most people look at a punishment and instantly label it ”Bad.” Spikes, on the other hand, appears to realize that a punishment can help him grow in the long run. By punishing himself, he is significantly decreasing the chances that he ever does anything out of line on the football field again.
When all of the aftermath is sorted out from this whole incident, I think that Brandon Spikes has actually increased his character in my eyes. If the eye gouge stunt never took place, I would just assume that Spikes had an average character/attitude. But since all of this took place, Spikes has shown to me that he is an above average person. The way he dealt with a complicated situation showed his true character, and it displayed something very special. He could have been like all of the rest of the players, who try and defend their actions by saying that somebody provoked them or it was all in ”the heat of the moment,” but he didn’t. He owned up to his bad behavior and he punished himself to learn a lesson.
Nobody is perfect, and everybody has issues that they need to work out. Most people are afraid to deal with those issues and actually face the fact that they have flaws. Brandon Spikes is not one of those people. In fact, he is the complete opposite.
