Watching Roy Williams struggle to fit in as a wide receiver in Dallas has me thinking about a role change for Roy E. Seeing how the Cowboys’ offense operates, and how Tony Romo chooses where to throw the ball, I think that it is in Dallas’ best interest to use Roy Williams in certain situations.
In my opinion, Dallas should use Williams in the red zone. In the red zone, Williams could use his large frame, just like tight ends do on that part of the field, and he could cause a lot of problems for defenses. When it comes to the red zone, getting open is not as important as size is, and that is where Roy Williams has an advantage over other receivers. He is clearly having problems creating separation between the twenties, and that is why Tony Romo is having trouble getting him the ball in that part of the field. Just look at what Romo can do with a guy like Miles Austin, whose speed creates the necessary separation that Romo needs from his receivers. Sometimes it looks like Romo is just favoring Austin, but in reality, he is just going to the guy who can get open the fastest. That just happens to be Austin most of the time.
If the Cowboys were smart, they would try to find a receiver with more speed to take Roy’s spot between the twenties. Romo is definitely a lot more effective when he knows his receivers can get separation from the defenders. So, it’s not that Romo and Williams are not getting along, it’s just that a guy like Williams doesn’t play to Romo’s strengths. Romo plays his best with receivers who can create separation, and Williams simply doesn’t fit that mold. The red zone, though, is a different story, as the field gets shorter, and the receivers need to be taller.
So Roy, do you really want to be a weapon in this Dallas offense? How about focusing on the red zone, so you can become the toughest receiver to defend on that part of the field?
There’s no doubt that Roy Williams is still a talented receiver in this league, he just needs to play to his strengths to get his confidence back.
