It’s no secret that the New York Knicks want to bring LeBron James to the Big Apple once he becomes a free agent this summer. However, if the Knicks don’t improve their play right now, he may not be interested in coming to the Knicks at all. Since that is the case, Donnie Walsh wants his Knicks to put forth a better effort, and he would love it if they made the playoffs this season.
Specifically, Walsh feels that his team needs to play with more purpose, force, and commitment. I translate that to mean ”better defense.” Well Walsh can run his mouth all he wants to the media, but if his head coach, Mike D’Antoni, doesn’t get the message, it will all be meaningless. Since I didn’t trust Walsh to relay the message on his own to D’Antoni, I figured I would e-mail the Knicks’ head coach personally. And to my surprise, I got a response! It may not have been the response I was looking for, but it was, nonetheless, a response that explained a lot.
In my e-mail, I explained to D’Antoni that if the Knicks want to get the big-name free agents, such as LeBron, his team needs to commit to winning now and playing better defense. I continued on and on about the importance of defense and how it could take his team to the next level. It was basically everything a Knicks fan would want to tell D’Antoni.
So how did D’Antoni respond?
The only way I could have expected him to:
“I understand almost everything you said, but I am a little confused about one thing. What is defense?”
And that, my friends, sums up the New York Knicks in 3 words: “WHAT IS DEFENSE?”
Sorry Knicks fans, but if you had any hopes of landing LBJ, they should have just flown out the window.
