Whenever a 42-year old kicker is something that is becoming a buzzworthy topic for your football team, you should definitely be concerned. Well, that is the case right now with the Dallas Cowboys. Matt Stover, who is a 20-year veteran, and currently the Colts’ kicker headed into the Super Bowl, said that it has always been a dream of his to kick for the Dallas Cowboys.
Stover said, “One of my dreams has always been to be a Dallas Cowboy. I was a Punt, Pass & Kick champion in 1979. I was out there in my Dallas Cowboy uniform punting, passing and kicking during the halftime show. And I was a Dallas Cowboy in the YMCA growing up. So it’s always been a dream of mine, but through 20 years of playing in the NFL, I’ve never had an opportunity.”
When this story came out, countless Cowboys supporters suggested that their team should get rid of Shaun Suisham in favor of Matt Stover. Now, I understand that kicking is an issue in Dallas right now, but Matt Stover?!? The guy is 42 years old for heaven’s sake! If that is really your next best option, you know that something is terribly wrong. What if Stover was asked to kick a 50-yard field goal, and he broke his hip? Do you really want to deal with something like that?
If you want to really be smart, you should drill kickoff specialist, David Buehler, all offseason long, until he has his accuracy down. He sure as heck has the power to be a good field goal kicker. How hard can it be to teach a guy accuracy?
