Serena Williams is battling to be fit in time for the US Open because of a recent foot injury sustained on broken glass in a restaurant shortly after her triumph in the ladies singles at Wimbledon. The world No 1 needed surgery and withdrew from three tournaments leading up to the Open. Williams subsequently withdrew from upcoming tournaments in Istanbul, Cincinnati and Montreal. The last of those, at Montreal, begins on 16 August and the US Open starts on 30 August leaving her little time to get fit.
Williams will be desperate to have a good tournament and put last year’s debacle in her semi-final loss behind her. Tennis Betting pundits recall how Williams saw red as she went out of the tournament and threw a tirade of abuse at a line judge at the end of a match against Kim Clijsters and was fined a record $82,500 for her troubles. Williams boasts an impressive record at Flushing Meadows. She has won the title three times in her four finals at the event. Williams has also won the doubles title her twice also partnering her sister Venus.
This has been another impressive season for Serena, considering she missed nearly three months with a knee injury. Along with winning Wimbledon, she also won the Australian Open at the beginning of the year. She didn’t really perform at the French Open due to her niggling knee injury, going out at the quarter final stage.
Despite her injuries this season, Williams and those who bet on US Open matches will be confident of picking up Grand Slam win number 14 in New York.
