Having just shown Ryder Cup Betting pundits that he is one of the world’s (let alone Europe’s) top golfers, Paul Casey could recently have been forgiven for throwing a Kevin Pietersen-style public hissy fit on one of the many social networking sites that modern day sportsmen and celebrities populate.
However, after failing to earn himself a captain’s pick from Colin Montgomerie ahead of the Ryder Cup, he has missed out on a place on the star studded team preparing to compete in Wales. Whilst the rights and wrongs surrounding his initial exclusion (which came after he failed to pick up enough points from the European Tour to earn himself an automatic qualification spot) are there to be debated, it is clear that Casey will be cheering on the players who will be looking to win back the Cup that they lost to Team USA two years ago.
Instead of venting his frustration in a manner that could have seen him left branded as a typically selfish modern day sportsman, Casey instead went out and played some magnificent golf that saw him end up with a second place finish at the BMW Championship in Chicago.
By choosing to go out and hit back at Monty and his vice captains by producing a performance that showed them precisely what they will be missing at Celtic Manor, Casey has won over many fans who had previously been upset with his attitude towards the Ryder Cup Odds.
With golf having been in the headlines for all the wrong reasons this year, it is fantastic to see a player go about his business in such a professional and dignified manner, something that representatives of certain other sports could learn a lot from.
