The promising Umatilla colt Sincero upset the fixed odds by making it four wins from seven career starts when taking the step up in trip to 1400m in his stride to easily account for a good field in landing the Coogee Dolphins Handicap at Randwick on Friday.
The Stephen Farley trained three-year-old, last seen in action when beating older horses impressively at Newcastle, quickened up with the minimum of fuss to beat Sir Fox by 2 ¼ lengths, giving the definite impression that his handler’s belief that his charge could develop into a potential Guineas contender is not misplaced. Farley has long suggested to horse racing betting fans that Sincero is the best horse to come his way since he took out a training license ten years ago.
Wyong-based Farley has long had the plan at the back of his mind to aim Sincero at the provincial Guineas treble of Gosford, Hawkesbury and Scone, and the next move will be to step his stable star up in trip again to 1600m to assure connections that he has the stamina to see out the Guineas distance.
Chris O’Brien, who was once again on board for the Randwick success, is expected to continue his association with Sincero, and hinted after the race that it is his belief that there is still plenty more to come from the progressive colt.
A bumper pre-Christmas crowd of more than 6000 racegoers was on hand to enjoy the Friday card at Randwick where they witnessed the impressive success of Paul Messara’s regally bred Line Honours, a daughter of the high class Alinghi (a winner four times at Group 1 level), who made a winning return to action having failed to get in foal when covered by Flying Spur at Arrowfield Stud earlier this year.
